Children under 14 are dying of fentanyl poisoning at a faster rate than any other age group, according to a new analysis of CDC data by Families Against Fentanyl.
Since 2015, fentanyl deaths has increased nearly 10-fold among infants and 15-fold — an increase of more than 1,400% — among children between the ages of 1 and 14.
In December 2021, Sharon Murfin lost her 17-month-old granddaughter, Serenity, to fentanyl poisoning. Serenity was under her parents' supervision at a friend's house when she was exposed to the opioid. There were six people in the home when the 17-month-old caught hold of what her grandmother believes was a foil. Serenity's father was charged in the incident and is currently in prison.
"We're having numerous babies [killed]. There's been a baby that's lost its life to breast milk because its mother took fentanyl. There's been three kids that split one pill. Two of them died. One made it. I mean, we have done our research," she explained."…They all OD-ed, but only one made it from that pill."
FAF noted in a press release that while suicides used to make up more than 25% of fentanyl deaths, suicides now make up less than 1% of fentanyl deaths.
