A French woman, Anne, fell victim to a sophisticated scam where she was tricked into believing she was in a relationship with Brad Pitt. The scammer, posing as Pitt, conned her out of $850,000. Musician Kid Rock commented on the story, sharing that his likeness has also been misused for similar scams in the past.
Musician Kid Rock recently commented on a news story about a scammer who tricked a 53-year-old French woman into sending $850,000, posing as actor Brad Pitt. Anne, the victim, appeared on the French news program Sept à huit to share her story. She explained how the scam began in 2023 with a message on Facebook from someone pretending to be Pitt's mother. This was followed by text messages from someone claiming to be Pitt himself.
Despite being married at the time, Anne engaged in an 'affair' with the scammer. Kid Rock, whose real name is Robert James Ritchie, shared a link to the news coverage on X, formerly Twitter, stating that his own image has been used for similar devious purposes in the past. He wrote, 'This has happened using my name and likeness many times. Hard to believe some people fall for it. Really sad, but if I am being honest, also really dumb. Sorry, no way to sugarcoat it.' He urged anyone who had been affected or felt they were being seriously trolled to contact the FBI and advised caution. While Kid Rock didn't elaborate on past instances of his image being misused, reports from 2015 indicate a scammer pretending to be him attempted to defraud a woman on Facebook. Rolling Stone reported in December 2022 that Russian troll accounts had used Kid Rock's likeness to create fake social media profiles, spreading misinformation and pro-Kremlin propaganda. Anne, the woman who believed she was in a relationship with Pitt, initially sent $9,000 to the scammer when they claimed to have bought gifts for her that required customs clearance. Anne later divorced her husband after the scammer proposed. When she received a substantial sum from her divorce settlement, the scammer claimed to need a loan for alleged cancer treatments. To convince her, they sent fabricated images of Pitt in a hospital setting. The scammer told Anne that due to his divorce from Angelina Jolie, he couldn't access his bank accounts. Pitt finalized his divorce from Jolie in December 2024. Anne claims to have sent approximately $850,000 to the scammer before realizing she had been tricked when she saw a picture of Pitt with his current girlfriend, Ines de Ramon.Pitt's spokesperson addressed the scam, stating, 'It's awful that scammers take advantage of fans' strong connection with celebrities. But this is an important reminder to not respond to unsolicited online outreach, especially from actors who have no social media presence.' Pitt does not have verified accounts on Instagram, TikTok, or X. In her interview with Sept à huit, Anne said, 'I'm not used to social media, and I didn't really understand what was happening to me.' Anne filed a complaint in 2024 and has since been receiving treatment for severe depression at a clinic. As of now, police are still searching for the scammer
