A federal judge imposed a sentence of three years in prison for the man who admitted to purchasing 133 guns that ended up in the hands of criminals around the Seattle area and used in dozens of violent crimes., including trafficking in firearms, making a false statement in connection with the acquisition of firearms, and straw purchasing firearms.
“54 of the guns that Dion Cooper purchased were linked in and used in violent crimes – a homicide, drive-by shootings, armed robberies, bank robberies, assaults – this wasn’t theoretical at all, these guns caused immense harm in our community,” Greenberg told KOMO News. Investigators traced the Glock handgun and found it had been purchased by Cooper months earlier. Seattle police contacted the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms & Explosives , who then discovered Cooper had purchased 107 between June 2021 and April 2023 other guns from firearms dealers in the Seattle area, according to the charges.Cooper did not have prior felony convictions and admitted to investigators that he was buying the guns for people who couldn’t legally purchase them.
“This havoc was wreaked in our community by only one of the guns that Cooper straw purchase,” Greenberg wrote in a sentencing memorandum. Cooper spoke in court at Friday's sentencing hearing, where his attorney asked for a sentence of only probation. "Criminalizing young Black men and removing them from their families for firearm offenses has not curbed gun violence," Brin wrote. Brin pointed out Cooper himself had been traumatized by gun violence when his childhood friend was shot and killed at the Kent Cornucopia Days festival in 2008.
