“We are rolling it this out this year because next year is going to be crazy with the presidential election.'
Hudson County Clerk E. Junior Maldonado, right, is seen demonstrating the early voting machine in 2021. He says new software will allow municipal clerks to get election results to the county quicker. Five of the six Hoboken City Council ward seats are contested and three people are vying to be the next mayor of Kearny when voters go to the polls in Hudson County on Election Day 2023 Tuesday.
In the past, county election officials would travel to each municipality and wait for all the voting machine cartridges to come in from polling places, and then be brought to the county election office in Jersey City to be tabulated. Tuesday, vote-by-mail ballots will be counted at 6 p.m. and the early voting totals will kick off the results at 8 p.m., Maldonado said.
The county clerk and the election division staff were also tired of seeing the results reported by the campaigns themselves well ahead of the results being posted to the county clerk’s website. In heavily Democratic Hudson County, the races for seats in the state Legislature are not expected to be competitive. The 32nd District will get a makeover in January when Raj Mukherji, currently an assemblyman, takes office as a senator; and newcomers John Allen and Jessica Ramirez, all part of the HCDO team, take office as new assembly members.
While Fourth Ward Councilman Ruben Ramos is running unopposed, incumbents Tiffanie Fisher faces a challenge from Marla Decker and Patricia Waiters in the Second Ward, Michael Russo is facing Edward Reep in the Third Ward, Phil Cohen is pitted against Liz Urtecho in the Fifth Ward and Jen Giattino faces Ian Rintel and Lauren Myers in the Sixth Ward.
