Even a windy day couldn’t stop the Prince and Princess of Wales from their recent historic outing.

Middleton accompanied William, the Prince of Wales, to the “enthronement” ceremony of Sarah Mullally, the first woman to head the Church of England since the 16th-century Reformation and subsequent break with Rome, which was held in Canterbury Cathedral.

It was a landmark event signifying the symbolic beginning of the ministry of the former NHS nurse who was ordained a priest in 2002 and became the first woman bishop of London in 2018. Before her, starting with St. Augustine in 597 A.D., only men held the position of archbishop of Canterbury: women after all were only admitted to the priesthood in the Church of England in 1994. For the extraordinarily important appointment, the Princess of Wales wore a warm wool and cashmere coat by Suzannah London, a favorite brand of Sophie of Edinburgh. It is a long overcoat with defined shoulders, wide peaked lapels, black silk satin trim, and the Prince of Wales checkered pattern. Middleton accessorized her look with a simple diamond cross pendant and a pair of gold and pearl Cassandra Goat earrings, first spotted in 2018 at little Louis’ christening. For the Archbishop of Canterbury’s installation ceremony, Middleton enhanced the Prince of Wales of her coat with the wide-brimmed straw hat created by Juliette Botterill that the princess had to hold with her hand to keep it from blowing away in the wind. What made the pairing apt was the houndstooth pattern, one of the patterns that make up the Prince of Wales. From her standout hat to her geometric patterns, Middleton dressed to impress for her recent outing, in which she and Prince William welcomed a historic new Archbishop into the fold.
