8TB of internal storage tucked inside a compact, rack-friendly chassis continues Kaleidescape’s push for more mainstream adoption.
It’s been a busy year or so for premium movie service Kaleidescape . Not content with launching a trio of new video players, it’s now unveiled a new video server that continues the brand’s apparent push to try and put its acclaimed service within reach of a much wider demographic than it’s been accessible to before.
The new Mini Terra Prime’s attractions start with the fact that it uses solid state storage rather than the regular hard disc drive storage used by some of its Kaleidescape server siblings. This makes it possible to use the built-in 2.5GB Ethernet connection to download movies – including titles mastered in 4K and HDR – much faster than you can with normal HDDs. In fact, it can take as little as just four minutes to download an average-length movie. In other words, from picking a movie you want to watch from Kaleidescape’s huge library to having it sat on the Mini Terra Prime ready to watch takes around the same time it takes to make a cup of coffee. At this point it’s important to clarify to people not familiar with Kaleidescape that it is very much not a video streaming service. The key word in the previous paragraph was ‘download’, since Kaleidescape works by downloading entire films to its servers for playback, thereby avoiding all the foibles and inconsistencies associated with live streaming over a broadband connection. The Mini Terra Prime carries 8TB of solid state storage, which Kaleidescape estimates should be enough to hold around 125 high-bitrate 4K movies . Its solid state nature also means it’s able to simultaneously play its contents back to a whopping 25 networked Kaleidescape players, versus a maximum of 10 with Kaleidescape’s regular HDD storage/server options. The Kaleidescape Mini Terra Prime can be rack mounted alongside the brand's identically sized Strato E and Strato M players.Every film will play from the Mini Terra Prime, whether it’s serving to one or 25 players, in the lossless picture and sound quality that’s become Kaleidescape’s trademark. The system’s premium AV standards include support for Dolby Vision high dynamic range and full-bore Dolby Atmos sound rather than the compressed Dolby Atmos you get with streaming services. Another attraction of the Mini Terra Prime is its design. For starters it’s exactly the same size and shape as Kaleidescape’s recently released Strato M and Strato E players, making for a more attractive pairing. It can also, like the Strato M and Es, be rack mounted. The Mini Terra Prime’s remarkably compact bodywork is made from architectural-grade steel, perforated by an attractive mosaic pattern of venting holes that enable to keep cool using silent natural convection rather than noisy fans. I should stress here that Kaleidescape’s recently launched Strato V, E and M players do each have a small amount of built in memory. So you can potentially use them by themselves without a Kaleidescape server in tow. Adding a server like the Mini Terra Prime, though, greatly enhances the seamlessness and simplicity of the Kaleidescape experience - not least because adding a server opens up the full Kaleidescape menu and operating systems, designed to cope with the much larger number of movies the system needs to deal versus the stripped back version you get when using one of the new players by itself. “Mini Terra Prime is Kaleidescape’s most compact movie server,” says Kaleidescape chairman and CEO Tayloe Stansbury, “but it delivers a mighty punch: fast downloads, high performance playback, and ample storage. It is the perfect complement for Kaleidescape M and E reference-quality movie players.”
