The union that represents more than 30,000 nurses and other workers has been on strike since Jan. 26

San Diego, CA – January 26: Kaiser Permanente nurse Mesha Wyatt, along with other nurses and healthcare workers picket at the Kaiser Permanente San Diego Medical Center as part of an unfair labor practices strike on January 26, 2026 in San Diego, CA.

Around 31,000 of the health care workers went on strike at facilities in California and Hawaii. The union that represents more than 30,000 striking Kaiser Permanente workers announced Monday morning that its four-week work stoppage will end Tuesday. Members of the United Nurses Associations of California/Union of Health Care Professionals walked off their jobs on Jan. 26, protesting what they called inadequate contract offers from their employer. Kaiser insisted that its offer of a 21.5% across-the-board raise was more than fair, but workers said that their concerns about inadequate staffing were not adequately addressed. Details on what caused the breakthrough that will end the strike were not immediately available Monday morning. The union’s statement indicates that there was “significant movement at the bargaining table” in the past 48 hours that led to the conclusion that “returning members to their patients and their livelihoods is the clearest path to securing a final agreement and building on the progress achieved during the strike.”Vehicles burn and stores close in Tijuana following the killing of a cartel leaderWhat happened to the Gaslamp promenade?Scrappy San Diego startup goes toe-to-toe with gene-sequencing giant IlluminaWhy California schools are broke despite increased state funding
