JW Anderson on our obsession with ‘ugly’
Of all the young London designers, JW Anderson seems the most interested in his generation's obsession with 'ugly'greets me at his Dalston front door, a mass of sweeping sandy hair that he plays with incessantly. This year has been a good year business wise for the 26-year-old designer.
He is in that precipitous position, the most fascinating in a designer's life, when the industry flips its taste coin and whichever way it lands decides whether he becomes an important fashion name or not. Of all the young London designers, he seems the most interested in his generation's obsession with ‘ugly', as if the previous one had monopolised extreme beauty and taken it to its logical conclusion.
. I know there's quite a lot of fannies in your face but there's a Paolo Roversi nude that I'm just obsessed with and I always draw over her. Obviously Anna Wintour got involved and I've had the walkthrough. You know, 'Keep us in contact with what you're doing' and, 'We'll help you out with whatever we can do.'It's like going onto a weird film set. Like, shit, now it's real. Ultimately it raises the bar but you then have to... keep going.
I don't know whether I'll be doing it in ten years' time. Ultimately I just want to create things; good, bad and ugly. As long as I can get up in the morning and afford to do it, then I'll do it.You want people to like what you do and to like you. Of course you do. That's a normal human condition. I can't be stupid about this. I do worry about things.
