The young designer's DIY videos are the perfect introduction to a stay-at-home activity that will breathe new energy into your wardrobe’s old favourites.
I left my job as a design assistant almost a year ago in order to focus fully on being a sustainable designer myself. I didn’t know what, or how, I was going to work sustainably, but I felt I had a responsibility to create fashion in a way that didn’t harmfully impact the environment.
I don’t feel that my gender or age have particularly impacted my success. Being young gives me a certain amount of freedom as I don’t have serious responsibilities that have tied me down or [that] I’ve been scared of risking by setting up my own business.
Financially, running a small business is hard and I work in a pub in the evenings to help cover my costs. However, I think if you totally believe in the purpose of your work and the solution to the problem you’re trying to solve, it is really rewarding and you can work through the obstacles.
I think these platforms are great for activism as it allows individuals to be part of communities who have the same beliefs and are pushing for the same changes. For me, I have interacted with so many people who are working sustainably and seen so many different ways people are approaching the issue and this is really motivating. Social media has given me a great platform to share and promote my work and it is also really encouraging when people react positively to your work and support you.
Sustainability in fashion is not a trend – it’s a change in approach to the way we design, produce and consume fashion. I think it is everyone’s responsibility to be a catalyst for change within the industry and each small step helps contribute to a shift. Look at how you could make small changes to the way you shop to be more sustainable. Consider the wider impact of the purchase rather than your personal gain, but who else in the chain of the item being produced has been and will be affected.
