A former Mobile fire captain's lawsuit alleging racial discrimination and wrongful termination was dismissed by a federal jury.

A federal jury today sided with the city of Mobile in a wrongful-termination lawsuit filed by a former fire captain who accused the city of retaliating against him. Rodrick Shoots, who now is the Prichard fire chief, worked for the Mobile Fire-Rescue Department from 1994 until November 2022.

He claimed that the city fired him because, as president of the Progressive Black Firefighters Association, he alleged the city racially discriminated against a Black firefighter who had been disciplined for a tattoo on the back of her neck, which the department said violated its policy. Shoots claimed lost income of more than $225,000 and was seeking $300,000 in compensatory damages for emotional distress and mental anguish
