The National League’s only 21-game winner in 2021 and the ERA leader in 2022 gets his first Opening Day start for the Dodgers.

GLENDALE, Ariz. – Julio Urias has thrown the last pitch of a Dodgers season. Now, he’ll throw the first.

Urias was officially named the Dodgers’ starter for Opening Day on Thursday against the Arizona Diamondbacks at Dodger Stadium. Clayton Kershaw has been the Dodgers’ Opening Day starter a franchise-record nine times in the past 12 years. Urias joins Hyun-Jin Ryu , Dustin May and Walker Buehler as the exceptions.

“I think he’s earned this opportunity,” Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said. “He’s checked a lot of boxes and this is one of the last for him and something that from his teammates to all of us, we’re excited for him to have this.” Urias earned the start after emerging as one of the best starters in the National League. Since closing out the 2020 World Series win for the Dodgers, Urias has gone 37-10 with a 2.57 ERA. He was baseball’s only 20-game winner in 2021 and led the NL with a 2.16 ERA in 2022. After finishing seventh in the NL Cy Young Award voting in 2021, Urias was third last season.Right-hander Zac Gallen will start for the Diamondbacks on Opening Day at Dodger Stadium.
