Yu Darvish's WBC schedule, Joe Musgrove's broken toe lead Padres to name Blake Snell their opening day starter; Snell last started on opening day in 2019 after winning the AL Cy Young award the previous year
The opening day start will be the second of Snell’s career. The first honor arrived with the Rays in 2019, a simple decision after his 21-win season earned him the AL Cy Young Award the previous year.
Yet for all his inconsistency and first-half struggles as a Padre, he’s not only the team’s only starter to be recognized as his league’s best pitcher, as he was in 2018, his 2.98 ERA since Aug. 1, 2021, is better than both Darvish and Musgrove .
