A federal judge in Maryland has temporarily stopped the construction of an immigration detention facility in Washington County, siding with the state that the Trump administration failed to complete an environmental impact study. The facility, a converted warehouse, was planned to house up to 1500 detainees. Maryland Attorney General Anthony Brown initiated the legal action, citing environmental concerns related to sewage construction and potential harm to endangered species. Work was scheduled to begin March 6.
Immigration and Customs Enforcement's Buffalo Service Processing Center in Batavia is pictured Wednesday, Feb. 25, 2026. A federal judge in Maryland sided with the state and temporarily halted construction on a Washington County warehouse being converted into an immigration detention facility .
In the order released Thursday evening, a judge said the Trump administration had not completed an environmental impact study on its renovations to the roughly $100 million warehouse that was previously privately owned. Maryland Attorney General Anthony Brown filed an emergency request Tuesday seeking a hold on the project after Washington County leadersEmergency order seeks to stop Washington County ICE detention facility construction The Trump administration's plans for the warehouse, located in the town of Williamsport, would likely be considered a "major Federal action" or one subject to "substantial Federal control and responsibility," part of the judge's order read. That major plan for renovations included plans to install security fences, a checkpoint, exterior lighting, and likely modify a sanitary sewer, and other measures to support up to 1500 detainees, according to court documents. In the opinion, Maryland argued that sewage construction work would require significant work and could cause pollution in Semple Run, Conococheague Creek, and the Potomac River. It could also pose risks to several rare and endangered species nearby. "We will not let DHS and ICE rush through the proper legal process in their haste to ramp up deportations," a portion of Attorney General Brown's statement read. "We will keep fighting to make sure the law is followed, and Marylanders are protected.”Work to renovate the warehouse had been scheduled to start on March 6 and was expected to end on May 4.A man died after he was stabbed late Tuesday night, and the man accused of killing him is now charged with murder.Columbus police confirmed the man was stabbedThe man accused of stabbing a man at an apartment complex in the Hilltop is now in custody, charged with murder. The Ohio State University College Republicans are urging the university’s Board of Trustees to select Ohio Lt.
