Ballistics expert Debra Gillis said the bullet recovered from 18-year-old Brett Allen 's fatal wound matched the handgun officers recovered from the defendant.FAIRBANKS, Alaska - Fairbanks Superior Court Judge Brent Bennett denied a motion for acquittal Wednesday at 47-year-oldPeterson is accused of shooting and killing 18-year-old Brett Allen near the corner of Goldstream Road and the Old Steese Highway in 2021.

In Alaska, if a person is the initial aggressor in an incident, he or she cannot use self-defense as legal shelter from criminal charges unless clearly withdrawing the aggressive behavior. Gillis testified Wednesday she received three pistols as well as numerous shell casings, bullets and a bullet core that law enforcement had recovered from the January 2021 shooting.

She said manufacturers put in lands and grooves — slightly raised and recessed spots within a gun’s barrel. When a bullet is discharged, the pressure pushes a round into those spots as it exits the firearm, leaving marks that can be unique to a particular weapon, Gillis explained. Peterson’s son, Aaron, also allegedly shot Allen and faces the same charges as his father: one count of first-degree murder and one count of second-degree murder.
