Contaminant complications continue to plague the City of Fairbanks.

FAIRBANKS, Alaska - Cowles Street and the South Davis Softball fields can be linked by car in a matter of minutes, but another thing ties them together is contamination.

As a workaround, the city has previously paid for installation and rental of three water tanks spread across the park. Another tank is in the offing after the association said the three couldn’t cover sufficient ground. “So we’re going to put the fourth tank in,” Pristash said, adding the job should be finished ahead of the upcoming season.

If excavated during construction, contaminated soil and other debris will have to be shipped out of state. That discovery, in tandem with inflationary pressures, launched a fiscal fusillade at the project’s planned budget, more than doubling the first phase of the Cowles Street reconstruction from about $7.5 million to more than $15 million.
