Joker 2’s Abandoned Original Plan Would Have Saved It From So Much Criticism

The initial unused plan for Joker: Foile á Deux looks like it could have saved the movie from a good chunk of the criticism the DC release is now receiving. Despite being the sequel to the massively critically and commercially successful 2019 Joker movie, the sequel hasn't enjoyed the same reputation, with Joker: Folie á Deux's box office results being far lower, and the film's reception being far more divisive.

Joker 2 Was Initially Considered As A Broadway Musical Close While the initial Joker was planned without a Joker 2 or Joker 3 movie in mind, discussions quickly emerged about a prospective follow-up release - seemingly partially because of lead actor Joaquin Phoenix and director Todd Phillips' connection to the project and its world, and partially because the immense success of the original movie meant there was ample room for further expansion.

3 These talks were, ultimately, short-lived. In an interview with Variety, Phillips explained,"When we started really thinking about it, we realized it takes four years to put something like that together. And is Joaquin really going to give six months of his life to do that every night onstage?" The director mentioned that the prospect of downsizing was considered for this project,"but COVID hit.
