Johnson went 2-1 and reached the consolation quarterfinals at the Texas 7-on-7 State Championships on Saturday in College Station.

Johnson receiver King Johnson is fouled by a Houston Lamar defender as he attempts to catch a pass during their quarterfinal game in the Division I consolation bracket at the Texas 7-on-7 State Championships on Saturday at Veterans Park in College Station.COLLEGE STATION — Looking to build off a third-place finish in District 28-6A last season, Johnson football head coach T.P. Miller wanted to see growth from his Jaguars in summer 7-on-7 competition.

“The guys are competing, they’re having fun, but we’re also working on the fall right now, and this is part of the process,” Miller said. “Today especially was about finishing, having fun and competing, and they responded.” Johnson junior quarterback Ty Hawkins showed rapport with his receivers, especially King Johnson, who is the leading returner in receiving yards for the Jaguars. Hawkins hit on three deep touchdown passes, including a pair of sideline throws to Johnson on consecutive possessions, to help the Jaguars jump to a 19-0 lead against Waller in the second round. Hawkins opened the scoring against Waller with a strike to Gabe Simpson down the middle.

The Jaguars found themselves down 13-0 late in the first half against Lamar, but Hawkins led an efficient drive on the final possession of the half, capping it with a touchdown pass to Johnson to cut the deficit to 13-7.
