Joel Kinnaman in 'The Killing'
Joel Kinnaman fans rejoiced this week as he appeared in a supporting role in the new Netflix series Jo Nesbø's Detective Hole. Kinnaman has had a rather dramatic career in Hollywood after breaking out with the Swedish crime movie Snabba Cash.
A role in the new Detective Hole series brings things full circle: He began his Hollywood journey with a main role in the similar television thriller The Killing before going on to star in major studio movies and franchise properties. However, Kinnaman has always had a difficult time drawing large audiences. His RoboCop remake simply wasn't successful enough to launch a franchise, and his other star vehicles also appear to have a box-office ceiling. Among the more recent ones is a movie that underperformed commercially despite a fresh take on familiar tropes. The movie in question was released in 2023, as a Christmastime counter-programmer. It managed to gross only $11 million worldwide, despite having built initial buzz online for its unique presentation as a near-silent vigilante thriller with limited dialogue. It also marked the Hollywood comeback of director John Woo after exactly two decades. The movie followed Kinnaman's character on a revenge mission against gang members who killed his son. It earned mixed reviews and is currently sitting at a 59% score on the aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes, where the consensus reads,"Silent Night reaffirms that an action movie doesn't need much dialogue if the set pieces are solid enough—and that even second-tier John Woo can be worth the price of admission." Alongside Monkey Man and Trigger Warning, Silent Night was one of the many movies that John Wick co-producer Basil Iwanyk made in the aftermath of its success. The movie is now heading to Hulu, where it can perhaps cultivate the home video following that it was always designed to attract. Silent Night will debut on the streamer on April 29.
