John Fetterman just won the Democratic nomination in the Pennsylvania Senate primary by throwing out his party's playbook.

in the Cook Political Report, it seems Democratic base voters “want fighters, not unifiers as their candidates.”echoed this notion. “They think Fetterman is the answer to Trump because he’s the guy that can win them back Trump voters. He has that rustic feel, he dresses down and he’s this tall, tough guy…. They think that he is the antidote to Trump,” he told me. “They do not want to put themselves behind a milquetoast candidate that seemingly appears good.

“I think if it was 2014, they would vote for Lamb. I think in 2022, with Trump leaving a very, very interesting stain on this nation, Democrats are recalculating the kind of candidates they put themselves behind,” he added.both Lamb and Fetterman, Lamb intoned that he would be returning to his 2018 playbook for winning.

That too appears like an oversimplification of Fetterman’s campaign. He certainly ran to the left of Lamb, but he’s far from a Sanders replica. On a number of his positions—many of which have become tests of progressive purity—his positions are a bit squishy: He is for “expanding health care access, whatever that looks like”; he said “defund the police” is an “absurd phrase”; once a hard-liner against fracking, now he has changed his tune and doesn’t support a ban.

Whether Pennsylvania Democrats’ bet on Fetterman will bear out in the general election remains to be seen. Mack, for example, is skeptical that Trump voters will ever be coming “back” to the Democratic party, even with Fetterman on the ticket. But his rise does suggest that Democrats in the Commonwealth are looking past the Lambs of the party—at least for now.was the answer to Trump in 2020, but at some point the base needs to see returns on its investment—real change.
