Musgrove's start was pushed back two days to make sure his feet were sufficiently healed after he developed blisters running on artificial turf in Mexico City
Joe Musgrove declared himself ready to go Sunday following a bullpen session Friday afternoon at Petco Park.
He had pushed to start Friday’s series opener against the Dodgers all along. But the Padres felt it was best to give him a couple extra days after he suffered burns on the bottom of his feet running on the artificial turf this past Sunday at Estadio Alfredo Harp Helú. Musgrove always runs barefoot in the outfield in his workouts between starts. He has long dealt with foot and Achilles issues, and he finds running without shoes soothing. But the turf in Mexico City was measured at 120 degrees around the time Musgrove emerged from the clubhouse to run Sunday.“It was below 80 degrees, and it was 10 a.m.,” Musgrove said. “So I walked out barefoot. I walked all the way to the foul line.
Musgrove has been undergoing treatment all week but said Friday he was wearing only a gel pad in his shoe.Sunday will be Musgrove’s third start. He did not make his season debut until April 22 after a February weight room accident in which he suffered a fractured left big toe when he dropped a kettlebell.
