Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden raised $154.5 million more in campaign funds in August than President Donald Trump. This likely gives the former vice president's campaign a significant funding edge for the last two months of the race.

WASHINGTON — Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden topped President Donald Trump in August fundraising by $154.5 million, likely giving the former vice president's campaign a significant funding edge for the final two months of the race.

The Trump campaign, the Republican National Committee and their joint fundraising committees raised $210 million last month, they reported Wednesday. That's far short of the $364.5 million August haul the Biden campaign, the Democratic National Committee and their joint fundraising efforts announced last week. The disparity comes as Trump confirmed Tuesday he's considering putting his own money into the race, which would be a departure from the way most incumbent presidents operate their reelection campaigns."If I have to, I would,” Trump told reporters Tuesday. “But we don’t have to." Neither campaign disclosed how much money they have left to spend before Election Day on Nov. 3. Biden is believed to hold a cash-on-hand advantage because both candidates had near the same balance entering August. Last month, the Biden campaign boasted a campaign war chest of $294 million still to spend after August, compared to $300 million for Trump. The Biden campaign said it raised a record $205 million from small-dollar online contributions, accounting for 57% of the August total. "That figure blows me away," Biden said in an email to supporters last week."And we raised it the right way, from people across the country stepping up to own a piece of this campaign, investing in the future we want to see for our kids and grandkids.” Biden's online fundraising figure by itself beat the previous monthly fundraising record for a single candidate of $193 million,Biden's fundraising was aided by his Aug. 11 selection of Sen. Kamala Harris as his vice presidential running mate,. The campaign said 1.5 individuals made their first donation to Biden in August, bringing the campaign's total number of donors to more than 4 million. The big month for Biden comes after Trump outraised Biden by $25 million – $165 million to $140 million – in July, ending a stretch of back-to-back months where the Biden campaign topped the incumbent president in campaign fundraising. Despite getting substantially outraised overall, the Trump campaign touted raising $76 million during the four-day Republican National Convention, topping the $70 million the Biden campaign raised during the Democratic National Convention. The Trump campaign also boasted the reelection campaign's largest online fundraising month. In a prepared statement, Trump campaign manager Bill Stepien talked up his campaign's"muscular field operation and ground game" while Biden wages"almost exclusively an air war." He also said money will not be a problem. "We like our strategy better," Stepien said. "The Trump campaign will have all the resources we need to spread the message of President Trump’s incredible record of achievement, on the ground and on the air, and define Joe Biden as a tool of the radical left."
