Jim Crane: Astros will 'do our best' to keep Justin Verlander in the fold

Astros owner Jim Crane said the team will"do our best" to try to keep aceJustin Verlander, who can opt to become a free agent. The Astros will do their best to try and keep Justin Verlander for the 2023 season, owner Jim Crane said Wednesday.

Verlander is expected to become a free agent this offseason. He holds a $25 million player option but would command a much larger deal on the open market if he pursues a new long-term contract. "Justin really had a great year," Crane said at Minute Maid Park."We have a good relationship with him. Both Dusty and I, and James . I think we have about 4 o'clock of free time to talk to him. We've been talking to him and we're working on it. We're going to do our best to try to keep him."

Verlander went 18-4 this year with a 1.75 ERA and 0.82 WHIP. One of the best regular-season campaigns of his 17-year career finished with a second World Series championship as an Astro. The veteran righthander is expected to be rewarded with the 2022 American League Cy Young. Verlander, who will turn 40 in February, has been with the Astros since 2017 and following the end of the owners' lockout, re-signed with the team last March after recovering from Tommy John surgery.
