Last week at the Jewish Lawyers Guild’s 47th annual gala, the organization feted two of New York’s highest ranking judges with awards named for icons within the Jewish community.At the March 24 gala, held at the Metropolitan Pavilion in Chelsea, the guild presented the Benjamin N. Cardozo Award — named for the famed United States Supreme Court justice from New York who served on the high court from 1914 to 1932 — to Jeffrey Sunshine, the longtime Brooklyn Supreme Court justice who now serves as the statewide coordinating judge for matrimonial manners. Appellate Division, First Department Justice Shlomo Hagler; Joseph A. Zayas, New York’s chief administrative judge; and Norman St. George, first deputy chief administrative judge of the New York court system, at the Jewish Lawyers Guild 47th Annual Gala at the Metropolitan Pavilion on Tuesday, March 24, 2026. Photos by Jefferson Siegel for the Office of Court Administration.The organization also presented the Golda Meir Memorial Award, which takes its namesake from the prime minister for Israel from 1969 to 1974, to Bronx Supreme Court Justice Capella, who serves as the administrative judge for civil matters in the Bronx. The guest list for the guild’s event included a number of New York’s highest ranking judges, including Chief Administrative Judge Joseph Zayas and Adam Silvera, the deputy chief administrative judge for New York City courts. Guests also heard an address from the parents of an Israeli Defense Force soldier who was captured during the Oct. 7, 2023 attacks and later freed.
