The New York Jets are still dealing with some key injuries heading into Sunday's game against the Giants. But should fans be worried about two of their best players missing the game.
Jets fans were concerned Wednesday when coach Robert Saleh reiterated what he said Monday about his top two defensive backs: Sauce Gardner and D.J. Reed were still in the concussion protocol, even though they were returning to practice.
“After the player-patient has established his ability to participate in non-contact football activity including team meetings, conditioning and non-contact practice without recurrence of signs and symptoms and his neurocognitive testing is back to baseline, the Club physician may clear him for full football activity involving contact in practice,” the NFL’s policy reads.
Of course, a setback is always a possibility between now and then. Perhaps that’s why Saleh refused to acknowledge it was a “formality” that Reed and Gardner would be cleared. But if you dig into Saleh’s reasoning for that, it feels like gamesmanship more than a realistic concern. “D.J. was on the same timeline,” Saleh said of that week, “And then Thursday, he couldn’t pass that hurdle on Thursday, so it’s going to be one of those things with both of them that will probably take all the way until game day.”
