With the legal tampering period officially beginning on Monday, the New York Jets wasted no time making roster improvements that will carry over into the 2026 season. The Jets are sending a 2026 7th-round pick from the Chargers to the Miami Dolphins for safety Minkah Fitzpatrick , first Fitzpatrick, 29, is a five-time Pro Bowler and three-time All-Pro, originally selected by the Dolphins in the first round of the 2018 NFL Draft.
He was traded to the Pittsburgh Steelers in 2019 for a 2020 first-round pick, and then returned to the Dolphins last season in a blockbuster deal that sent Jalen Ramsey to Pittsburgh. In 2022, the elite safety led the NFL in interceptions, totaling 21 over eight seasons.Even while suffering multiple injuries throughout the last several seasons, Fitzpatrick proved he could stick on the field while playing at an elite level, starting 14 games with 82 tackles, one interception, and six pass breakups. The trade for Fitzpatrick perfectly fills the Jets’ biggest need — an elite ballhawk presence in the secondary. In 2025, New York became the first team in NFL history to go an entire season without recording a single team interception. Fitzpatrick is the perfect fit for an Aaron Glenn-style defense, having rare “five-tool” versatility, being able to slot at either free safety, strong safety, slot corner, outside corner, and even an occasional nickel linebacker. Glenn will be calling defensive plays for the Jets in 2026 while also working closely with new Jets defensive coordinator Brian Duker, who has firsthand experience working with Fitzpatrick after serving as the Dolphins’ passing-game coordinator in 2025. After making the trade, the Jets are expected to sign Fitzpatrick to a three-year, $40 million extension, blocking his ability to hit the open market in 2027 as a free agent. Gang Green currently has $58.9 million in cap space, with more offseason moves expected to follow. This might not be the last time New York is linked with its division rivals this offseason. It was also reported on Monday that the Dolphins will be releasing quarterback Tua Tagovailoa, which adds another viable option in the Jets’ search for a bona fide No. 1 option under center.from Dolphins as secondary re-build begins‘Sopranos’ creator, stars talk ‘best show ever made’ during panel at Museum of the Moving Image in AstoriaCops hunt for suspect who stabbed man outside Flatiron Taco BellBronx Times
