The high school opened in 1906 and was renamed William L. Dickinson High School in 1913 for the superintendent who had advocated for creation of the school during his term from 1872 to 1883.
The Jersey City school district will celebrate its 150th anniversary with a special ceremony at its oldest high school Saturday afternoon.
The 150th anniversary ceremony will follow in the auditorium. The event will conclude with a time capsule burial on the grounds after the event. Dickinson High School, originally called Jersey City High School, opened in 1906 and was renamed William L. Dickinson High School in 1913 for the superintendent who had advocated for creation of the school during his term from 1872 to 1883. Lincoln High School was the second city high school to open, in 1913.
The site was utilized to assist in defending New York after the outbreak of the War of 1812 and the following year, an arsenal was built on the property’s west side to protect the harbor. During the Civil War, the arsenal served as barracks for Union soldiers and as a hospital.
