Spring has sprung, and with it comes the annual closure of certain areas in Jefferson County Open Space parks to protect wildlife during their sensitive breeding season s. These closures, which run from this weekend through July, are a vital part of ensuring the well-being and continued success of various species.Specific areas will be closed for different reasons.

Clear Creek Canyon Park, North Table Mountain Park, and South Table Mountain Park will see closures to safeguard nesting raptors, including golden eagles, from human disturbance. The Rim Rock Trail on North Table Mountain and sections of South Table Mountain will be off-limits to protect these birds of prey and the habitats of ground-nesting birds. The closures at Clear Creek Canyon, above US 6, will impact several popular rock-climbing sites, including Bumbling Stock, Stumbling Block, Skinny Legs, Blonde Formation, Ghost Crag, Highlander, Evil Area, and Tetanus Garden. Cathedral Spires Park will be entirely closed from March 1st to July 31st for the same reason. The Black Bear Trail, connecting Deer Creek Canyon Park to Hildebrand Ranch Park, will be closed from Saturday through July 31st. Lastly, the Crown Hill Bird Sanctuary will be closed from March 1st to June 30th to protect waterfowl and other wildlife
