Drew Weisholtz is a reporter for TODAY Digital, focusing on pop culture, nostalgia and trending stories. He has seen every episode of “Saved by the Bell” at least 50 times, longs to perfect the crane kick from “The Karate Kid” and performs stand-up comedy, while also cheering on the New York Yankees and New York Giants.
Jeff Ross has a little reminder of Al Roker. The Emmy-nominated comedian — who was diagnosed with colon cancer in 2024 — used his signature humor to explain his illness's connection to the TODAY show weatherman.
“I named my tumor Al because it’s shrinking,” he quipped during the 3rd hour of TODAY on March 27, while Al, Dylan Dreyer and Craig Melvin cracked up. “That’s a good point,” Dylan said. “There you go. You’re in the right spot,” replied Al. Ross also shared an update on his treatment: “I just had the chemo port taken out,” he said. “I’m taking a little bit of a moment of like, ‘Whoo!” A chemotherapy port is a device implanted into the skin that delivers the medication intravenously, according to the Cleveland Clinic. Ross has previously shared that he was diagnosed with a Stage 3 tumor in his colon after getting his first colonoscopy in his 50s. Stage 3 colon cancer means the cancer has spread to nearby lymph nodes but not other areas. He had to have 7 inches of his colon removed followed by several months of chemo. Ross has said he didn't expect the diagnosis because he had no symptoms, but he got the colonoscopy at his friends' suggestion, since he was well over 45, the recommended age to start regular screening . 'You always think it’s never going to happen to you, and it happened to me,' he said on 'Jimmy Kimmel Live!' in June 2025. On TODAY, Ross went on to extend his well wishes to others currently battling cancer and gratitude to his own community. “I don’t gloat. ... I know there’s a lot of people still in the fight and I always say it’s not just the fight, it’s the army,” he told Craig, Dylan and AL. “It’s the people that helped me get through it. And the results ... they don’t matter as much as the love and support you get.” Ross joined TODAY to promote the release of his one-man Broadway show on Netflix, titled 'Take a Banana for the Ride,' which touches on his recent health challenges. In it, he again honors the people who helped him navigate treatment. 'As I went through it, with myself and chemo, it was really my family and friends that lifted me up and helped me get through it,” he said on the 3rd hour of TODAY in July 2025. “Plus, get a colonoscopy, folks. It saved my life.” While the show was emotionally heavy for him at times, he was able to stay motivated thinking about other who have cnacer. “If it was just about me, I don’t think I’d be able to sustain the show, but it’s been cathartic for people who see it, and they’re telling me their stories afterwards, and it’s kind of cool. It feels like a communal, cathartic comedic experience,” he said.
