It’s quiet on the Mayfield trade front, but things could get cooking again soon once the dust settles on the draft. Some veterans will stay in the wake of the draft, and some will go. Others might show up on the doorstep.
Cleveland Browns Jarvis Landry vs. Cincinnati Bengals, January 9, 2022CLEVELAND, Ohio — The Browns drafted nine players last weekend and are gearing up for rookie minicamp next weekend. They’re also in the thick of their offseason program, and are in the process of reshaping their personnel department.
The narrative that the Browns are stuck with Mayfield because teams don’t want to do business with them in the wake of their NFL-record fully-guaranteed $230 million contract for Deshaun Watson is off base. Teams don’t want to pick up his contract, hoping he will be cut and they can get him on the cheap. But Mayfield drew interest from a handful of franchises, and the Browns engaged in trade talks with the Panthers throughout the weekend. They also executed draft-weekend trades with the Texans, Vikings and Rams, and had discussions with multiple other teams.
The Browns are confident that Watson will make Donovan Peoples-Jones, Anthony Schwartz and the other young receivers better, and don’t feel pressured to add another vet. Besides, now that David Njoku is the No. 1 tight end, he’s likely to get more than the 53 targets he got last season. The selection of Ford in the fifth round isn’t expected to impact Hunt, who’s heading into the final year of his contract at $6.25 million.
For now, it appears that Hunt might play out his contract and then test the free agent market, with a chance to be another team’s workhorse back after this year. Johnson could stick around as the No. 3 back, and Ford as a running back of the future. While Landry is all but gone, Clowney could be back in the fold soon. The selection of Alex Wright out of UAB at No. 78 in the third round doesn’t preclude the re-signing of Clowney — although it makes it a little less urgent.
The Browns coveted other players who were off the board at No. 44. One was Washington cornerback Kyler Gordon, who went to the Bears at No. 39, and another was Clemson cornerback Andrew Booth Jr., who went to the Vikings at No. 42 after they traded up from No. 46 to grab him.
