Advocates and residents say they feel they’ve been left out of conversations at City Hall, while District 5 frontrunners say the neighborhood is front of mind
No matter who wins San Francisco’s District 5 supervisorial seat in the Nov. 5 election, Japantown residents say the race represents an opportunity for their neighborhood to have a greater say in city politics.
“I’m really hoping, especially when the election is over, that whoever is going to be in the position to lead The City and lead our district will be more open and really push to make sure that Japantown is included in any kind of funding that's available,” said Grace Horikiri, the executive director of the Japantown Community Benefit District.
“It was important for us to have that here and hear from them,” Mahmood said. “How do we expand on-demand shuttle access for seniors? “We can only stay silent for so long,” she said, adding that there’s a Japanese term, “enryo,” “which means ‘you hesitate.’”
