Destination Nihonmachi will include artists and performers from both neighborhoods in an effort to revitalize the communities’ once-close relationship
A new festival coming to Japantown on Saturday aims to celebrate the community’s artistic history — and its neighbor’s as well.
Earlier this year, federal officials granted The City $2 million to fund a study to find ways to reconnect the two neighborhoods. Born and raised in the Fillmore, Balinton said that the culture back then was more inclusive than it is now, and he and his wife hope that this festival might hearken a bit back to those days.
“ is to show how it used to be, and hopefully we can get that unity back again,” Lorraine Balinton said. “It wasn’t about everybody doing their own thing — we did it together.”
