Season two of ‘Schmigadoon!’ allows Jane Krakowski a unique, clever entry point into the razzle-dazzle of Broadway.
she says, “I wanted to start from scratch and create an entirely different character than [the original’s], but I also felt that I wanted to come up with something that was as uniquely important to the character.
” So when directorsuggested aerial silks, she spent evenings after rehearsals learning the ropes on her own. Duringasked her to raise her leg. She jumped into a split to make her cast members laugh, it worked, and the move was choreographed in.came about, she knew the producers would want to pull every move from her playbook. Her character was only supposed to fly in on a trapeze, but Krakowski thought it’d add to the scene’s spectacle—and to her own hunger for fun and curiosity—if she learned how to truly work it, so she sought out trapeze schools in Vancouver. Those skills went in, on top of an act that features roller-skating blindfolded as well as ventriloquism and Sondheim patter singing. “How great it was that Cinco would give Bobbie the patter within ‘Bells and Whistles’ to give her courtroom summation?” Krakowski says. “Interestingly, it’s the only time she’s completely standing still and not pulling out any bells or whistles. It’s the moment you realize, ‘Oh, she actually has a comprehension of the law.’”flights of camp? In an utterly un–Jenna Maroney way, she’s eager to share the credit. “I mean, God, we’re in the midst of a writers strike right now, and boy am I thankful for the writing I’ve gotten over the years, I’ll tell you that,” she says. “And Bobbie Flanagan is just a great creation…. She does all the bells and whistles, but when it comes down to it, she’s very smart and very shrewd.” Even if she might not say so herself, that’s a pretty apt way to describe Jane Krakowski too.
