Unsigned stories — “A Street Called Broadway” and “Julius the Town Cryer” — spur quest to uncover the authors.

The Rt. Rev. Everett Holland Jones, bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of West Texas, visits St. Mark’s Episcopal Church in 1943. Another “Alamo Heights oldtimer,” as identified by the author of “A Street Called Broadway,” Jones lived on Grandview Place and had taught briefly at Texas Military Institute on College Boulevard, both in Alamo Heights.I am in the process of clearing out my mother’s things and came across some typed pages titled “Julius the Town Cryer” and “A Street Called Broadway.

Julius Myers was San Antonio’s town crier, who made his way on horseback through the city streets advertising upcoming events, such as sports games, parades, fairs and store sales. He was active in the 1910s and ’20s and is said to have been the last of his kind.“Advertising banners were draped over his horse’s hips and shoulders,” says Schulz, noting that Myers announced upcoming Texas League baseball games as well as parades, fairs and benefits.

Given these dates, he is most likely John T. Schulz Sr. of Three Rivers, whose obituary in the Corpus Christi Caller-Times identifies him as a “farmer, rancher and self-employed businessman.” That indicates that he’s not the author of the second, three-page story among your mother’s papers, “A Street Called Broadway.” That person worked at the Light and grew up in Alamo Heights.
