Allie La Valle, owner of Larder Delicatessen & Bakery in Cleveland, has been named a semifinalist for the James Beard Foundation Award for Outstanding Pastry Chef or Baker. La Valle, who discovered her passion for baking in culinary school, creates all the breads and desserts for the modern Jewish deli she co-owns with her husband.

CLEVELAND , Ohio --When Allie La Valle was growing up in Oklahoma she loved cooking, something she shared with her grandmother and father. It wasn’t until culinary school that she fell in love with baking.
“My first love was cake decorating,” she says. In culinary school and beyond, that love grew into something bigger. Today, she makes all the breads and desserts at Larder Delicatessen and Bakery in Cleveland’s Hingetown neighborhood. She and her husband Jeremy Umansky opened the modern Jewish deli seven years ago.
