Former Houston Astros coach Trey Hillman, now with the Los Angeles Angels organization, speaks with Geoff Blum, left, and Astros third base coach Gary Pettis during batting practice before the start of an MLB baseball game at Minute Maid Park on Wednesday, April 20, 2022 in Houston.Five Astros pitchers combined for a solid 8 ⅓ innings Wednesday night against the Los Angeles Angels, starting in the first inning. Unfortunately for the home team, however, none started the game.

The 6-6 Astros, who dropped to .500 for the first time this season after starting 4-1, endured a failure to launch on the night. Houston collected its lone hit in the bottom of the sixth inning on a soft liner by catcher Jason Castro, the No. 8 hitter in the lineup, to right-center field, in gently breaking up Ohtani’s bid for a perfect game.

Meantime Odorizzi, who signed with the Astros in March 2021 as a free agent, turned in his shortest non-injury outing in Houston. Odorizzi allowed six runs on two hits and four walks, in repeatedly narrowly missing the strike zone, in two-thirds of an inning. Nearly half of his 42 pitches were balls .

The Astros will try and collect their thoughts Thursday on a rare day off before hosting the Toronto Blue Jays in a three-game series starting Friday night.
