The Astros’ designated hitter returned to the lineup Monday with a vengeance evident in his first plate appearance.
In his first game back since an illness sidelined him for road series against the Diamondbacks and Mariners, Alvarez hit 3-for-5 with two home runs and four RBIs to boost the Astros’ struggling lineup toEven before he got sick with a fever that kept him isolated in his hotel room for four straight days, Alvarez struggled at the plate during the Astros’ opening series in Anaheim.
Astros manager Dusty Baker was initially unsure about playing Alvarez on Monday as he considered giving his slugger an extra day to recover. Alvarez rewarded him for his decision. Alvarez authored his first three-hit game since Sept. 22, 2021, also against the Angels, and his first multi-homer game of the season. Dating back to his debut in 2019, Alvarez’s nine multi-homer games are the most by any designated hitter in that span except Nelson Cruz .
