Alabama guard Jahvon Quinerly relishing return to form after transferring and finding his fit with Alabama
Alabama Guard Jahvon Quinerly makes a dribble move against Maryland at Legacy Arena - Birmingham in Tuscaloosa, AL on Saturday, Mar 18, 2023.LOUISVILLE, Ky.
Quinerly, 24, played a capable Odysseus the last five years. As a high school senior, he committed to Arizona before the FBI chargedwith conspiracy to commit bribery regarding his recruitment and de-committed soon after. Opposing fans threw Monopoly money at him during a game in Jersey City, but Quinerly was cleared of wrongdoing.
He was a shifty shot-maker. In an age of high-flying demonstrations of athleticism, he mimicked the below-rim theatrics of a local collection of players who finished with finesse. They called each other Jelly Fam, promoted themselves on social media and cameras trailed them through games and workouts. He won a state title with Hudson Catholic as a junior, studied Advanced Placement English and tutored peers as a member of the National Honor Society.
Quinerly quickly switched to Villanova, which was coming off a national championship run in 2016. By the time Quinerly arrived on campus in the fall of 2018, Villanova secured a second championship, and he appeared to be the next in a long line of Jersey guards – Randy Foye, Mike Nardi, etc. – to run coach Jay Wright’s offense, but Quinerly looked lost on Lancaster Avenue. What flowed in high school froze in the Big East. He struggled to adjust, managed to play 9.
“When I transferred to ‘Bama, people laughed at me,” Quinerly said. “I promise you people laughed at me. They didn’t think I would win the way that we have won. It’s just a really good feeling proving people wrong. I feel like that motivated me to go even harder.”
