To help, Aina spoke with cosmetic chemist Victoria Vohland, who explains that setting spray is made up of three components: water, alcohol, and a film former, which creates a barrier on the face to prevent makeup from slipping. It's the same chemical formula used in hair gel, just made safe and gentle enough for use on your face.
"These are very much used in long-wear makeup, especially when [brands] make claims like '12-hour-wear,'" Vohland explains, vouching for the usefulness of makeup setting sprays. Then, the setting sprays get put to the test. Half of a model's face gets sprayed with setting spray, while the other half is left with just makeup. Aina asks the model to run for a few minutes on a treadmill, just enough so that her face develops a light sheen of sweat.
