A transcript and video of the deposition of former Department of Justice's special counsel Jack Smith was released in a post on X by the House Judiciary GOP Wednesday. Smith was appointed by Attorney General Merrick Garland as the Department of Justice's special counsel to oversee the criminal investigations into President Donald Trump's actions during the January 6 United States Capitol attack.
He resigned from his position in January 2025. The deposition released Wednesday is from December 17, when Smith told lawmakers in a closed-door interview that his investigative team “developed proof beyond a reasonable doubt” that Trump criminally conspired to overturn the results of the 2020 election. “The decision to bring charges against President Trump was mine, but the basis for those charges rests entirely with President Trump and his actions, as alleged in the indictments returned by grand juries in two different districts,“ Smith said in the deposition. “Our investigation developed proof beyond a reasonable doubt that President Trump engaged in a criminal scheme to overturn the results of the 2020 election and to prevent the lawful transfer of power.“ This is a breaking news story.
