Amir El-Masry in Jack Ryan
Prime Video’s Jack Ryan series is so fun and fast-paced and wildly entertaining that you won’t want to stop watching; you’ll keep telling yourself, “Just one more episode.” Tom Clancy created Jack and his supporting cast in the 1980s, when they reflected the brink-of-nuclear-war contemporary political climate.
The Amazon Jack Ryan show updates Jack and the other characters for the modern world. John Krasinski plays the title role in a stark contrast to his last major TV role. In The Office, Krasinski was the slacker everyman who spent his days stuck behind a desk, pranking his co-workers. But in Jack Ryan, he’s a CIA analyst who’s whisked away from the comfort of his cushy desk job and sent around the world to uncover a widespread conspiracy. Jack Ryan ended with its fourth season in 2023, but Amazon is continuing to expand the franchise. A spinoff series starring Michael Peña as Ding Chavez is in development and, perhaps more tantalizingly, Krasinski is reprising his role in a sequel movie, titled Jack Ryan: Ghost War. Before the movie comes out, it’s the perfect time to catch up on this utterly watchable action thriller. What Makes Prime Video's Jack Ryan The Ultimate "One More Episode" Series Similar to Amazon’s other smash-hit action series, Reacher, Jack Ryan is endlessly watchable, because it’s thrilling, it’s fast-paced, and it revolves around a hero who’s easy to root for. Jack Ryan drops the pretense that its title character is a CIA analyst thrust into these dangerous, life-threatening situations, and just turns him into a traditional action hero. The TV adaptation of Jack is much more in line with beloved action heroes like James Bond and Jason Bourne than his literary counterpart. In Clancy’s books, Jack was depicted as an egghead alternative to Bond and Bourne, but the TV show has scrapped that caveat in favor of a more straightforward action-adventure show — and it works wonders. Whereas Clancy’s novels and the previous Jack Ryan movie adaptations have gotten bogged down in geopolitics and the themes that come with it, the TV show is more focused on entertaining its audience than informing them about the state of the world. That’s earned the show a less enthusiastic critical response than some of the other Ryanverse projects, but it’s exactly what makes it so much fun. A show like The Wire or Chernobyl might be a masterpiece that everyone should watch, but you won’t want to watch it all day. They deal with such heavy subjects, and put their characters through such horrific trauma, that you need a break every now and then. Jack Ryan, on the other hand, is a perfect comfort show. Translating That Appeal From TV To A Movie Is Jack Ryan's Next Big Challenge Across its four seasons, Jack Ryan perfected the TV formula. It kept audiences watching week after week, year after year, and the cast settled into their chemistry. But a movie presents a completely different challenge. As we saw recently with Peaky Blinders: The Immortal Man, it’s hard to make a TV-to-film adaptation that doesn’t just feel like a long episode of the series.Jack Ryan: Ghost War is set to be released on Prime Video on May 20, 2026. Krasinski is not only reprising his role as Jack; he’s also got a writing credit on the movie, so he’s heavily involved behind the scenes. Krasinski has proven with his A Quiet Place franchise that he’s a great filmmaker, and he can tell great stories in the feature medium, so the Jack Ryan movie is in safe hands. But a movie presents a whole different set of challenges than a TV show. It’s a totally different format, and the audience has totally different demands. Jack Ryan worked great as a TV show; hopefully, it’ll work just as well as a movie.
