. He explained the creative direction and why the character’s brutality exceeds what the films showed. He stated, “Even though the style and the tone of the movies is continued, the volume is a little higher in terms of intensity, both in horror and emotions.” He also added that this approach “potentially” extends to the fun element, noting that the goal was to give viewers “a little bit of a heightened experience.” Set in 1962 and based on Stephen King’s 1986 novel It, It: Welcome to Derry serves as a prequel that explores Pennywise’s origins while following new characters tied to the town’s early history. Taylour Paige, Jovan Adepo, Chris Chalk, Clara Stack, Amanda Christine, and Mikkal Karim-Fidler lead the cast, and Bill Skarsgård returns to play Pennywise. Development for the series began in 2022, with Andy Muschietti, Barbara Muschietti and Jason Fuchs leading the project. HBO greenlit the series in February 2023, and Muschietti directed multiple episodes, including the pilot. Filming began in May 2023 in Toronto, Hamilton and Port Hope, paused during the strike, and wrapped in August 2024. The series premiered on HBO on October 26, 2025.
