Party officials were still trying to make sense Sunday of the shooting.

A handful of Trump supporters gathered Sunday down the road from the former president's Bedminster gold club, where Donald Trump is presumably residing. At the same time, state Republican officials said they are still trying to make sense of the incident but will will press forward with plans to attend the party’s national convention in Milwaukee this week, albeit with added caution and security.

The New Jersey Attorney General’s Office declined to comment Sunday about whether there will be added security elsewhere in the state as a result of Saturday’s incident.’s office deferred comment to the state Department of Homeland Security and New Jersey State Police. Neither immediately provided comment Sunday.

“We’re still going, just with security tighter,” said Fields, the state’s Republican National Committeewoman.”When it’s your time, it’s your time,” said Fields, who was also a New Jersey delegate to the convention in 2016. “You’ve got to live life.””I couldn’t talk,” she said. “Now I know how everyone felt when JFK got assassinated.”

Hugin seconded that he personally does not feel concerned about his safety. Still, he condemned heated rhetoric “on both sides” for stoking tempers. ”It’s a combination of sadness and anger,” Pennachio told NJ Advance Media. “To me, my heart breaks. There’s a dead person here. Somebody died. Donald Trump escaped within fractions of an inch being assassinated.“, R-Morris, said in a statement Sunday that “we should all come together in condemning the violence and hatred that has become commonplace in today’s political environment.”
