Ambitious rail projects are moving ahead nationwide, though some not without big problems. San Diego's coastal rail route remains uncertain.
In December, a high-speed rail project between the Inland Empire and Las Vegas received a $3 billion federal grant, which helps push the train line closer to its planned opening in 2028. In September, a privately operated train line that tops out at 125 mph opened in Florida between Miami and Orlando.
said it may unveil its preferred route this spring. Whichever one it is — even the Del Mar City Council's favored route — political fights and legal action are sure to follow. Those certainties, along with money issues and the human tendency to kick problems down the road, may have kept efforts to resolve the issue in the slow lane over the years. “This project will happen,” interim
CEO Coleen Clementson said at a Del Mar City Council meeting last week. San Diego should have been past this point long ago. Yet, in Orange County officials are even farther behind in moving toward a long-term rerouting of the coastal tracks that have been shut down by landslides and surging seas. So, it's not just a local issue. The notion of not having a train route up the coast, for the most part, has long been unthinkable in San Diego.
says it is focused on immediate fixes and long-term rerouting of the coastal tracks, and not the high-speed rail project. ' is actively monitoring all future rail plans across the state, and we will coordinate with HSR as plans develop,' Clementson said in a statement. If the state's high-speed rail system turns out to be the boondoggle the Modesto-to-Bakersfield line seems to be so far, San Diego may be glad it didn't get on board. Meanwhile, the future of the region's lone rail line is, literally, a cliff-hanger.
