The National Weather Service issued a rare tornado warning for a wide swath of south and east San Diego County shortly before noon Tuesday after a rotation in a thunderstorm was detected by radar. The alert was lifted around 12:15 p.
m. 'When you get real strong thunderstorms they start to rotate. The radar can pick that up, and if the circulation is strong enough it can indicate that a tornado is either forming in the cloud or potentially developing on the ground,' said National Weather Service meteorologist Alex Tardy. 'So it is literally a circulation within the thunderstorm itself.' No damage from a tornado has been reported, officials said. Tardy said tornado warnings are very rare in San Diego. The last one was issued Aug. 20 when tropical storm Hilary hit the region. Before that, one was issued in March 2023 in North County. 'Severe thunderstorms are rare, let alone tornado warnings,' he said. Alerts rang out on cellphones starting at 11:44 a.m., when the weather service reported a severe thunderstorm was located over Paradise Hills and near Chula Vista. The initial warning extended to a wide area including Chula Vista, El Cajon, National City, La Mesa, La Presa, Paradise Hills, Lincoln Park, Spring Valley, Lakeside and Crest. By noon, the severe thunderstorm was located over El Cajon and was moving northeast at 35 mph. At one point, the warning was supposed to last until 12:45 p.m. The NWS warned residents to stay indoors and away from windows, saying a tornado could damage roofs, windows and vehicles and uproot trees. Schools in the area alerted parents that students and staff were sheltered in place.
