ANALYSIS: Shemara Wikramanayake is the bank’s first CEO to be regularly paid less than her subordinates and, based on profits, is the lowest-paid since at least 1999.

Since she became Macquarie chief executive, Shemara Wikramanayake has been paid $85 million. It is a huge sum, even for the head of a large investment bank. But compared to her male colleagues and predecessors, though, the company’s first female chief executive looks underpaid.

Wikramanayake’s elevation to chief executive in November 2018 was seen as a seminal moment in Australian business. It also marked a step down in relative pay for the Macquarie CEO. Her ascension hasn’t changed one thing about Macquarie: the top-paid executive has always been a white male. Next to the statement is a photograph of Wikramanayake on International Women’s Day with 19 other female Macquarie employees.Despite the emphasis on equality, Macquarie remains, like most high-paying organisations, a male-dominated company. Some 92 per cent of its administrative and clerical staff are women. Less than 30 per cent of the senior management ranks are female.took over in 2018

According to the records available, Allan Moss was always paid more than his subordinates, except for 2008, his last year in the position. In that year, he was paid less than Moore, who replaced him.
