On Sunday, regional diplomats met in Pakistan in hopes of setting up direct U.S.-Iran talks to end the war. But according to Iranian state media, Iran’s parliament speaker, Mohammed Bagher Qalibaf said Iranian forces were “waiting for the arrival of American troops on the ground to set them on fire and punish their regional partners forever.” He also called the talks a cover for 2,500 U.S. Marines arrived in the Middle East. The war has threatened global oil supplies, natural gas and fertilizers while also disrupting air travel. Iran’s control on the Strait of Hormuz, a vital pathway for oil supply, has sent markets and prices into chaos. Now, the Iranian-backed Houthi rebels' group have entered the war and are threatening shipping on another crucial waterway — the Bab el-Mandeb strait to the Red Sea. The foreign ministers of Saudi Arabia, Turkey and Egypt are expected to meet again on Monday to discuss a framework for a possible peace deal.
