A counterterrorism expert warns that Iranian sleeper cells might be operating undetected within the United States, potentially poised to strike rural areas.

A counterterrorism expert warns that Iran ian sleeper cells might be operating undetected within the United States, potentially poised to strike rural areas . Following recent U.S. military strikes on Iran ian nuclear sites on June 22, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) issued a National Terrorism Advisory System Bulletin, elevating the threat level for Iran ian-backed or domestic terrorism.

The bulletin expressed concern that Iranian leadership might issue a call for retaliatory violence against targets in the U.S., potentially spurring violent extremists to act. Jonathan Gilliam, a former FBI special agent with experience in terrorism task forces, told Fox News Digital that these sleeper cells could be hidden in plain sight, making them particularly dangerous. He expressed concern that the Biden administration's border policies have facilitated the entry of Iranian illegal immigrants into the U.S., potentially creating conditions for sleeper cells to form. Gilliam argues that the Biden administration's approach to illegal immigration, including failing to properly vet asylum seekers from Iran, has inadvertently provided a pathway for potential sleeper agents to infiltrate the country.According to Gilliam, these sleeper cells might specifically target rural areas due to their perceived vulnerability. He cites recent attacks in Israel and India as examples of how fundamentalist Islamic groups might choose rural, outdoor locations for their operations. Following the U.S. strikes on Iranian nuclear facilities, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has intensified efforts to apprehend Iranian nationals illegally present in the U.S. Since June 18th, over 130 Iranians have been arrested, with 670 currently in ICE custody. While the potential threat from sleeper cells is concerning, experts emphasize the importance of vigilance and information sharing to effectively counter this type of terrorism
