IPOH: City folk have been reminded to maintain the cleanliness of their homes and surroundings to prevent more mosquito-borne diseases from spreading.
Ipoh City councillor Tony Khoo said while the city council was doing its best to ensure the cleanliness of the city, the people too must be responsible to keep their surrounding premises clean."The city council is trying its best to keep the city clean so we hope the people too will play a role to assist us," he told reporters after a gotong-royong activity at Kampung Simee here on Sunday .
It was reported that Perak had recorded 454 chikungunya cases as of May 23 this year, about 30 times more than recorded last year within the same period. Kampar recorded the highest number with 157 cases, followed by Larut, Matang and Selama with 109 and Kinta with 99.At Kampung Simee alone, Khoo said there have been seven chikungunya and 14 dengue cases.
He said the gotong-royong session, which was organised by the city council and the Kinta Health Department, was aimed at improving the situation there and to prevent more chikungunya or dengue cases. “Besides the clean-up, we've also talked to the villagers to raise awareness about these diseases, ” he said.“These tanks, if not maintained, will allow the Aedes mosquito to breed. We hope the villagers can keep these tanks well-maintained," he said.
