State officials are working with the St. Charles police and fire departments to determine the cause of the massive fire at the former Pheasant Run Resort in St. Charles over the weekend.

The resort’s main lobby, its Bourbon Street area and A, B and E wings of the hotel rooms at Pheasant Run were destroyed in a fire that began Saturday afternoon, St. Charles Fire Department officials said in a news release Monday. The fire was extinguished Sunday and one fire unit remains on the scene to control a few remaining hot spots, fire officials said Monday. The fire was contained to the center structures of the complex and crews were able to save the 16-story tower on the property.

Fire crews were called around 4:40 p.m. Saturday for a report of a fire and found “serious fire conditions” coming from several areas within a structure on the property.More than 20 area fire departments joined in on the response. No injuries were reported during the fire. Since it opened on Feb. 15, 1963, the resort grew from 184 guests rooms to 473 - plus two theaters, a spa, comedy club, golf course, restaurants, 100,000 square feet of meeting space and a Bourbon Street replica.

The resort closed its doors in March 2020 after attempts to auction the resort were unsuccessful. In November, the St. Charles City Council’s Planning and Development Committee recommended approving a zoning map amendment that would help create a proposed industrial park there. St. Charles city staff had also recommended in March creating a tax increment financing district to assist with redevelopment at the site.
