Huntsville police have completed their investigation into a firearm discharge at Challenger Elementary School, finding no clear explanation for how the gun ended up in a student's backpack.

Huntsville police concluded their investigation into a firearm discharge at Challenger Elementary School on February 6th. The incident occurred when a bullet exited the backpack of a second-grade student and struck another student's backpack. Thankfully, the bullet was ultimately stopped by a laptop inside the second student's backpack, preventing any injuries. Police stated that the student involved was unable to explain how the firearm ended up in their backpack.

Despite further investigation, authorities were unable to determine the source of the weapon. The Department of Human Resources was notified to develop a safety plan and engage with the student's family. Police consulted with the victim's family, the Neaves Davis Center, and the Madison County District Attorney's Office to determine the most appropriate legal course of action. On the day of the incident, the Huntsville Police Department (HPD) filed two criminal case reports: one for unlawful possession of a pistol by a minor and another for reckless endangerment. The District Attorney's Office ultimately chose not to issue a warrant for the second-grade student regarding the unlawful possession of a pistol by a minor.
